On Tuesday, February 14, Bronx Science knocked off Curtis High School 53-24 to claim the 2017 PSAL Blended League Wrestling Championships.

Curtis put the first team points on the board at the Girls 172lb weight class with the Warriors’ Jycenia Navarro picking up a third period fall over the Wolverines’ Donia Ballan.  Bronx Science’s Steve Shinas evened up the team score 6-6 with a fall at the Boys 182lb weight class. A major decision from the Wolverine’s Jon Samuels at Boys 220lb gave Bronx Science an 11-6 team lead.

Curtis inched ahead 12-11 with a Javan Pastoriza pin at Boys 285lb. The one point team lead was short-lived, as Kathryn Varghese scored a first period pin in the Girls 105lb weight class to put Bronx Science up 17-12.

After that, Bronx Science never looked back.

The Wolverine’s 106lb Boys wrestler Lucas Pulsifer picked up a forfeit, Girls 117lb Magdalene Pernambuco earned a fall, and Boys 120 Sammee Buccellato also earned a fall to give Bronx Science a near-unsurmountable 35-12 lead. The Warrior’s Isha Bamba scored an exciting 7-6 decision at the Girls 125lb weight class to try to rally Curtis, but a two more consecutive Bronx Science victories, a fall by Jin Koo at Boys 132lb and a 12-6 decision by Unwana Abasiurua at Girls 139lb, brought the team score to 41-16, effectively cementing the team win.

Joe Larrosa earned a Curtis fall at the Boys 145lb weight class, but the extra team points were muted with a forfeit to Bronx Sciences’s Summer Gould at Girls 159lb. In the last match of the evening Bronx Science’s Julius Yudelson put an exclamation point on the Wolverine’s team performance with a first period pin, bringing the final team score to 53-24.
