Staten Island, New York – In one of the most evenly matched PSAL Wrestling Championship finals in the last five years, Brooklyn Tech held on for a 42-28 victory. The match was a rollercoaster of a dual meet that saw several lead changes, and was not decided until the fourteenth match of the night.

Action started at the 160lb weight class with Petrides’ Sean Gillespie bringing the Panther fans to their feet with a quick first period fall. Brooklyn Tech answered in similar fashion at 172lb with the Engineer’s Chris Panagakos scoring a first period fall of his own. In keeping with the trend, Petrides regained the team lead with the Panther’s Jared Quick recording a first period fall at 182lbs. With Petrides up 12-6, the quick pins came to a halt, with the 195lb match going the distance, and Brooklyn Tech’s 195lb Frewdy Adevdo picking up a 3-1 decision to narrow the Petrides lead to 12-9. Tech regained the lead 15-12 at 220lb when Hammad Saeed put the Panther’s Justion Lorenzo to his back for the fall.

The Heavyweight match was one for the books. In triple overtime, Petrides’ Nick Azzato came out with a victory to even up the team score 15-15. The 99lb match featured Brooklyn Borough Champion Kai Yudelson taking on Staten Island Borough Champion Brandon Fallon. Brooklyn proved to have the stronger Borough Champ, with Yudelson pinning Fallon in the third period, giving Tech a 21-15 lead. The Engineer’s Anthony Ferrara picked up a fall of his own at 106lb to extend the Tech lead 27-15. At 113lb, Petrides Senior Kevin Velez breathed new life into the Panther squad with a dominating 22-10 major decision to narrow the score to 27-19.

126lb featured two City Champions facing off, with Brooklyn Tech’s Division 1 champ Matt Mina taking on Petrides Division 2 champ Brandon Foster. The match was everything one would expect from two city champions, with Mina escaping with a narrow 6-5 victory and an additional 3 team points to extend Tech’s lead to 30-19. Petrides’ Amir Johnson did his part to rally the team, putting his Tech opponent to his back in the second period to bring the Panthers within five points at 30-25.

132lb featured another city champ vs. city champ match with Tech’s Division 1 City Champion Zacc Romero facing the Panther’s Division 2 City Champion Kevin McColgan. The match went the distance, but Romero held on for a 9-4 victory, claiming three more team points to put Tech up 33-25. Petrides Freshman Mike Diforte wrestled like a senior, defeating Tech’s Mayor’s Cup Champion David Perullo 9-6 at 138lb. The Diforte victory brought the team score to 33-28, keeping a victory within reach.

At 152lb, Tech Senior Joshua Wong wrestled his final match in an Engineer singlet, and a memorable match at that. Wong scored a pin at the five minute mark to give Tech a 39-25 lead. With only one match remaining, Wong’s fall sealed the Tech team victory. At 152lb, Tech Senior and Mayor’s Cup Champion Murad Ramazonov held on for a 2-0 decision in the final match of the evening to make the final team score 42-28.
