Beat The Streets - New York City Wrestling

We are extremely excited for the 2017 Gotham City Girls Open Championship, sponsored by Cliff Keen Athletic, being just three days away! The Open will be taking place at Columbia University’s Dodge Fitness Center from Saturday, April 22 through Sunday, April 23.

There are 211 registered participants (and counting!) with the youngest being a first grader. The competing weight classes--Kids I, Kids II, Modified Cadet, and Junior-- will represent a wide cross-section of girls. Depending on their weight class, these youth, middle school, and high school wrestlers would have been born between 1997 and 2010 and will weigh anywhere from 45 lbs to 255 lbs. So far, this year's competitor's are hailing from 23 different states and three countries. Based on the state and national accolades some of these girls have already collected, it's certain that the country’s future National, Pan Am, World Team Champions, and All-Americans will be competing.

At the 2014 Open, six local high school girls became champions. At the 2015 Open, Curtis HS of Staten Island claimed the tournament team title, with multiple NYC girls becoming individual division champions.

As Jacque Davis, head girls’ coach for Beat the Streets, said earlier this year, “By getting some of the toughest global talent to compete at Gotham City, our girls get to see what women's wrestling really looks and feels like. It forces our girls to start training, thinking and competing a different way.”

Cliff Keen gear specifically made for 2017 Gotham, including t-shirts and backpacks, will be available for purchase at the event. All Junior Finalists will be given “Finalist” singlets. It should be especially noted that the first 200 Juniors that check in on competition day will get a bag. Thank you, Cliff Keen!

The following colleges will be sending representatives and coaches--Menlo College, Mckendree University, Emmanuel College, Adrian College, Life University, Bacone College, College of Mt. St. Vincent, Springfield Technical Community College, Lakehead University.

The brackets will be available live on Flo Arena for this tournament.
