Beat The Streets - New York City Wrestling

From Friday, April 28 to Sunday, April 30, 22 BTSNY wrestlers traveled to East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, New York for Northeast Regionals. This was the Northeast qualifier for Cadet and Junior Nationals, with the top four in each weight class going to Fargo. 11 BTSNY wrestlers qualified, with Brandon Nunez (1st in Freestyle, 2nd in Greco) and Jayson Gomez (3rd in Freestyle, 1st in Greco) placing in both Freestyle and Greco. Three were the Greco champs at their weight (Jayson Gomez, Demetrius Henry, and Deshawn Herbert) and one was a Freestyle champ (Brandon Nunez). The full list of qualifiers is below.

Penn Gottfried, Junior League Director, enjoyed bringing BTSNY wrestlers to a high-caliber wrestling tournament like Northeast Regionals because it is "a great chance to evaluate our wrestlers  and our program to see where [BTS] stacks up." While not as many wrestlers qualified in Freestyle, Gottfried was pleasantly surprised to see many BTSNY wrestlers come out on top and win at least two matches. According to Gottfried, this tournament shows the definite upward trend that BTSNY wrestlers are exhibiting.

While Gottfried knows that he and the wrestlers aren't satisfied, he also thinks they've overcome a big hurdle in just understanding what is necessary to make it the next level—for many of the wrestlers, how to place in the top four at Northeast Regionals next year. Gottfried confidently said that by the time States and Nationals come by, "there will be a lot of heads turning in the Beat The Streets Wrestlers direction."

Demitreus Henry, the 152 lb Greco Champ said he went into Northeast Regionals with a mindset to take each match at a time. He described how Gottfried's coaching advice "played a big factor in how I wrestled mentally because he kept me motivated, told me to find my angles, to go out there wrestle hard—but most all, have fun while doing it."
Jayson Gomez, the Greco Champ and Freestyle third-placer, appreciated the weekend with supportive teammates and coaches, despite some losses. "My teammates showed support for everyone--  I couldn't ask for a better teammates or better coaches!"

This trip also allowed eighth grade wrestlers to be on the same trip with seniors, giving the younger kids a chance to bond with and learn from the seniors. The younger wrestlers were able to see where they could be in a few years as long as they remain committed to the sport. As Gottfried said, "whether it be hanging out at night ordering pizza or having an older kid coach a younger kid, these trips really develop that bond necessary to create a culture and a family."

Congratulations to everyone who placed. We look forward to seeing how you all do next year!
