Beat The Streets - New York City Wrestling

New York City – Led by 112lb Pearl Fletcher, Truman took home three individual titles and ran away with the team title at the 2017 PSAL Girls Wrestling Championships. Fletcher scored three pins on the day, and was selected by the coaches as the 2017 Cheryl Wong Outstanding Wrestler.

Joining Fletcher at the top of the podium were teammates Nia Crosdale and Chloe Cabrera. Crosdale pinned Bronx Studio’s Taiwo Fayemi in the 172lb final. Cabrera, a freshman, entered the tournament as the #2 seed and faced returning PSAL Champion Unwanaabais Abasiurua of Bronx Science in one of the most highly anticipated matches of the day.  In a very exciting match Cabrera scored a late takedown and a pushout to earn a 6-3 victory.

Edward R. Murrow matched Truman’s gold medal count with Nighyar Calliste winning the 117lb title, Jacqueline Tlaczani winning the 139lb title, and Elizveta Vedernikova winning the 148lb title.

Truman scored 167 team points on the day, out distancing runner-up Brooklyn Tech by 60 points. Tech’s 107 points were enough to narrowly edge out Wingate for the team sliver. Wingate claimed the team bronze with 103 points. Rounding out the top five were A.P. Randolph with 88 points, and Bronx Studio School with 86 points.

Host Brooklyn Tech took two individual titles with Jamie Ngai winning the 121lb title and Katrin Pokalylchin winning the 125lb title. Curtis also took two individual titles with reining National Champion Haily Cancelleri walking through the 159lb bracket and Shalee Williams picking up the 198lb gold.

The other individual champions were Sunset Park’s Ashley Gomez at 98lbs, New Dorp’s Zopouled David at 105lbs, and Bathgate’s Victoria Bakre at 255lbs.

The PSAL welcomed World Champion and U.S. Olympian Elena Pirozhkova as a special guest to the Championship Finals. Ms. Pirozhkova provided the commentary for the live stream and presented the brackets to the Champions.
