Beat The Streets - New York City Wrestling

From Friday, May 19 to Sunday, May 21, seven  Beat the Streets girls attended Women's Nationalspreviously known as Body Bar National, in Irving Texas. Considering that this tournament is the Cadet/Junior World Team Trials, the girls met some tough competition in the earlier roundsCoach Jacque Davis, Head Girls Coach, felt that while there were losses among the wins, every match was one "which we proved we deserved to be in."

Four girls managed to place: Michaela Beck (2nd in Cadets, 11th grade, Fusion High School), Nia Crosdale (3rd in Cadets, 11th grade, Truman High School), Hailey Cancelleri (7th in Cadets, 11th grade, Curtis High School), and Zopouled David, (7th in Juniors, 12th grade, New Dorp High School).

Though Davis believes that the team could have done better, she also believes that this was the best the BTSNY team has ever finished at this event. This year, more BTSNY girls placed than any other year and displayed the best techniques and most outstanding attitudes

"It's a climb to the top, but until then, we will trust in the process and I will enjoy the journey with these amazing kids," said Davis.

Zopouled David felt her last year at Body Bar as a high schooler was "amazing." She came away from the weekend grateful that she did place and with the belief that "sometimes we find ourselves in situations that either build us or help others around us-- situations, we learn and grow from." She feels blessed to have been a part of the New York girls national wrestling team and also for being able to wrestle in the USA world tryouts again.

Outside of the wrestling, Davis feels like the trips to Irving are always fun because the girls have an imagined idea of Texas based on what they've seen on TV. As a result, walking around the city is an interesting eye-opener.

As part of the experience to try new things, Davis tried to take the girls to an "awesome outdoor food truck place, but they wouldn't let kids in after 9 pm." This led the group to what has become an annual tradition while in Irving-- a trip to Sonic.
Davis recounted how previous trips usually included moms accompanying the group, but that this time, dads came along. She especially commended Hailey Cancelleri's dad, Michael Cancelleri, "for coming along and being nothing short of awesome!" Mr. Cancelleri provided support throughout the trip that was appreciated by Davis, his daughter, and all the other girls on the trip

As always with the trips BTSNY kids take outside of the city, this was a great opportunity for growth and bonding. Congratulations to all who placed!
