Beat The Streets - New York City Wrestling

The 2018 NYC Mayor’s Cup Cliff Keen Wrestling Championships took place this past Saturday, January 20 at Queens College. The Mayor’s Cup was a chance for 240 of New York City’s top high school wrestlers from the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL), the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA), and the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) to compete for the title of “Best in the City.”

Every match was fierce, with some new faces making their way up the ranks. Quite a few new faces became champs, and some old faces proved themselves yet again. The top three teams at this year's Mayor's Cup were Tottenville (186.5), Monsignor Farrell (176.5), Grand Street (149.5). The list of champions and teams can be found below. Check out Gotham City Wrestling's awesome post for a more detailed description of each finals match and wrestlers . A new addition to this year's Mayor's Cup was the Beat the Streets Junior League All-Star Match. 32 of the best Junior League wrestlers competed with and against each other in this dual meet as members of Team Orange and Team White. This was a unique dual meet opportunity for participants and onlookers alike. Since there weren't weight classes, match-ups that wouldn't happen at tournaments allowed for some riveting new challenges.

The first match of the afternoon, which was between Elijah Ross of Eagle Academy and Rasul Kakhromonov of David A. Boody, went into overtime. Another great match was between Allessandra Elliott of Tottenville and Beautiful Robinson of M.S. 129, both of whom are rising stars, that resulted in a 1-0 victory for Elliott. Matches such as these gave the audience a good look at the immense potential these future high school wrestlers have. The Junior League wrestlers themselves became better acquainted with high school wrestling in a new tournament environment, leaving an impression and having many of them see where they could be in the next few years. "I was very impressed to see all my teammates wrestling and giving it their all," said Carlos Guzman, an 8th grader from RKA.

Ultimately, Team White won the day with a hard-fought 39-33 victory. Italy’s World Champion Frank Chamizowho was in attendance, took a group picture with the Junior League wrestlers (above).

Penn Gottfried, Junior League Director, was pleased with the great success of this new Junior League opportunity.  "Everything we are doing right now at the Middle School level is about closing the divide between M.S. and H.S. and raising the level of youth wrestling in NYC," began Gottfried. "This event accomplished both of those perfectly by showing the M.S. kids where they will be wrestling in the near future and showing the rest of the city how good our younger wrestlers actually are!"

Thank you to Cliff Keen for sponsoring this event! As always, we look forward to seeing how the wrestlers grow as the season continues.
