The 12th annual Eastern States Classic was held this past weekend at Sullivan Community College in Loch Sheldrake, NY. Competing in the two-day event were 127 teams, representing six different states from around the United States.
Beat the Streets traveled with a contingent of wrestlers from seven schools across New York City. Head Coach MarcAntoni Macias said it was “a weekend of great sportsmanship, competition, and wrestling all-around.” Represented schools included Benjamin Cardozo, Brooklyn International, Curtis, Eagle Academy, James Madison, MLK, and New Utrecht.
In the end, Clovis West, travelling all the way from California, took first place with 129 points. They did so without crowning a single individual champion, and had only one finalist.
Beat the Streets placers included Nathanael Rose from Eagle, who took fourth at 195 lbs, and Konstantin Parfiryev of James Madison, taking eighth in the 160 lbs weight class. Rose, who had lost to Erik Jessel during the placement round of the Virginia Beach Nationals last year, avenged that loss with his defeat of Jessel in the third round consolations. This was the second trip to Eastern States for both he and Parfiryev, and the first time placing for each of them.
Daniel Amancio from MLK also had a noteworthy performance. Down 8-1, he came back to win 12-10 in the second round of the wrestlebacks, scoring nine points in under four minutes.
“It really was a fantastic weekend, both in terms of wrestling and behavior,” noted Macias. “We received many compliments from parents and coaches regarding the sportsmanship of our athletes and the smoothness of the weekend as a whole. A great event, as always, and one we look forward to attending again next year.”
