Beat The Streets - New York City Wrestling

On Sunday, July 31, Beat the Streets sent a bus to the Long Island Summer Heat Folkstyle Tournament held at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. 20 kids used BTS transportation, and about ten more attended with a parent or a coach.

Beat the Streets had one champion, one second, and several third and fourths in a tournament that only placed the top four contenders.

Two girls, Amanda Bonnano and Ashley Mason, competed in the boys division. BTS Coach Penn Gottfried says that this shows the girls’ commitment to getting in competition in any way possible.

Coach Gottfried also says that this tournament shows the program’s wrestlers are “working their butt off to get better.”

“The guys and girls that showed up to the tournament and are showing up to the Big Apple Games are going to see results come next season, Gottfried said. It’s not enough to show up physically -- they also have to come prepared mentally. “Their hard work will only pay off if they believe that they can compete with those from Long Island, upstate New York and all around the nation. I challenge them to get that mindset and start wrestling with a chip on their shoulder. If they can do that, then I guarantee that positive results will start coming in the state and nation."
