Beat The Streets - New York City Wrestling

This past weekend, twenty-one New York City kids closed out the month of April with some high-caliber wrestling at the Northeast Regionals at East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.

“Beat the Streets kids were competitive and fighting for every position,” said BTS coach Penn Gottfried. Almost every NYC youth in attendance won at least one match. “Our team showed a lot of fight and I think our hard work is paying off. In Freestyle and Greco, a wrestler can be on the verge of getting teched and then come back to win.  We never gave up and due to our determination and grit pulled some matches out that we should not have won.”

Some of the standouts included Demetrius Henry and David Flynn in the Greco competitions. Both kids were down in some tough matches but successfully battled back so that they could earn their trip to Fargo.

The event meant a good deal of fun for the attendees, in part because it was a relatively small group of people who readily came together as a team. “During every match there was a crowd of BTS kids supporting their teammates,” Gottfried noted. Because there were only a couple of coaches, sometimes the kids would run over and start ‘coaching’ a match in progress. They did this happily, and Gottfried suspects that this helped them learn how to wrestle better themselves as they coached one another.

The Beat the Streets team gained the respect of the other competitors at the event, fighting for every point during their matches. The team proved highly competitive and racked up a number of impressive wins.

Beat the Streets was also joined by Coach Ray Brinzer, Iowa All-American and former USA National Greco Team member, who got to know the kids and was in their corner giving useful advice for every match. “The kids got to know him and are learning from him very well,” said Gottfried.

As one of the referees remarked after a particularly close match, “Whatever you guys are doing at Beat the Streets, it is working.”
