THE ACADEMY

Launched in 2019, the Beat the Streets Academy aims to prepare student-athletes for success both on and off the mat. This application-only program provides free-of-cost resources such as SAT prep, mentorship, Training Center practices and much more.

Open to dedicated middle school and high school student-athletes across all five boroughs, the Academy teaches the skills necessary to succeed in wrestling, graduate high school, and pursue post-secondary study. Beat the Streets serves youth of color from low-income backgrounds, who statistically are more likely to face barriers to graduation and college entry.

WHAT WE DO

HOW IT WORKS

The Academy meets after school over two semesters. Academy student-athletes receive additional practice time and support including life skills and college readiness workshops, college visits, travel competition opportunities, social events and more. The program is structured around 10 Academy Nights (five in fall, five in spring), which feature guest speakers and group discussions along with a wrestling practice led by Olympic champions, U.S. World Championship team members, NCAA coaches and champions!

All Academy seniors receive a monetary scholarship to support college tuition and fees. In the summer, Academy student-athletes learn from college athletes and coaches who are hired exclusively for the BTS Academy summer camp.

For more information about the Academy, email BTS Director of Programming
Bob Seidel at bseidel@btsny.org.

SAFETY GUIDELINES

At the beginning of the school year, all BTS coaches and staff members must undergo an annual background check and participate in the "Safe Sport" certification training.

“Because of the BTS Academy, my kids have drive. They have learned to give their all to whatever it is they do. They are learning much more than just a sport.”
