13 wrestlers win titles at 2022 NYC Mayor's Cup Wrestling Championships

Alexis Elson becomes first girl to reach the finals in the 'Best in the City' high school tournament history.

After a one-year hiatus, the NYC Mayor's Cup Wrestling Championships returned with 13 wrestlers claiming the title of "Best in the City" on Sunday, Jan. 30 at Chelsea Piers.

Sponsored by Cliff Keen, Beat the Streets hosted the 18th annual tournament which included New York City's best high school wrestlers from the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL), Athletic Association for Independent Schools (AAIS), Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) and New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS).

Eagle Academy for Young Men of the Bronx captured their first team wrestling trophy and championship in NYC Mayor's Cup history with 165.5 points. Eagle Academy claimed the title by 22 points over Farrell of Staten Island. Tottenville of Staten Island (141), Cardozo of Queens (100) and Collegiate of Manhattan (95) rounded out the top five.

Cardozo and Farrell were the only two schools to have more than one individual city champion. Michael Adams of Farrell claimed his third city title, while the other 12 champions captured their first.

Three champions were also named most outstanding wrestler for their respective association: Isaias Torres of Grand Street Campus (PSAL), John Michael Economos of Farrell (CHSAA) and Sean Tansey of Collegiate (NYSIAS).

More than half of the 26 city finalists wrestled in Beat the Streets' Junior League, which is the city's only middle school wrestling league and provides after-school programming.

Alexis Elson, a 102-pounder from RKA (Queens), became the first girl to reach the city finals in tournament history. Kerry Ghanie, a former PSAL wrestler at Francis Lewis (Queens) and Beat the Streets alumnae, also made history as the first woman to officiate the tournament's final matches.

Donations to Beat the Streets along with dedicated volunteers, who started as early as 5:30 a.m., and members of the NYC wrestling community helped make the tournament possible.
