Beat the Streets Academy's Amir Avazov wins 2023-24 PSAL Wingate Award

The Brooklyn native won a boys wrestling state championship this year.

Amir Avazov earned the Boys Wrestling Wingate Award, which is awarded to the top senior boys wrestling student-athlete from the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) in New York City.

The PSAL Wingate Award recognizes the most outstanding senior student-athletes in their sport from New York City public high schools. Avazov was nominated by New York City coaches, commissioners and sports coordinators.

Avazov, who is a Beat the Streets Academy graduate, won the Division 1 138-pound title at this year's New York Public High School Athletic Association Individual Championships (NYSPHSAA). He took fourth place at the 2023 state tournament. He is the fifth individual state champion from the PSAL, and the first from James Madison High School in Brooklyn.

Greisy Penalo of Bronx High School of Science earned the Girls Wrestling Wingate Award. Penalo captured the 191-pound title at the PSAL Girls Freestyle City Championships.

Since being founded in 2005, Beat the Streets has pioneered a movement that now includes 150 individual wrestling programs, a youth league and the first girls high school league. BTS works to develop the full human and athletic potential of the urban youth and strengthen the New York City wrestling culture.

We aim to make a lifelong impact on student-athletes through the lessons learned on the wrestling mat -- discipline, perseverance, self-reliance, humility and a strong work ethic. Discover how you can make a meaningful contribution to our work at btsny.org/donate.
