Beat the Streets alumnae Sophia Mirabella takes 6th at U.S. Open
The East Elmhurst, New York native earned two wins at the U.S. Open.
Sophia Mirabella captured sixth place at 59 kilograms in women's freestyle at the U.S. Open on Friday at South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
The Beat the Streets alumnae and East Elmhurst, New York native went 2-3 in the tournament. She upset No. 4 seed Bridgette Duty 10-6 in the opening round then defeated Nonnie Justice by a 11-0 (4:53) technical fall to advance to the semifinals.
Mirabella then fell 10-5 to Bill Farrell champion Xochitl Mota-Pettis in the semifinals to drop to the consolation round, where she lost by fall to Duty and declared no contest against Hailey Corona in the fifth-place bout.
Mirabella, a 2019 New York state freestyle champion, is currently wrestling for King University. She earned 2021 NCWW All-American honors by taking fourth place at 115 pounds in her freshman season at King. Last May, she also took seventh place at 53kg at the 2021 Junior Women's National Championships and second at 55kg at the U23 National Championships.
