Beat the Streets names Jonathan Alicea as Junior League Manager
The BTS alumnus will support and facilitate the organization’s Junior League program for K-8 students.
Beat the Streets Executive Director Brendan Buckley and Director of Programming Bob Seidel are pleased to announce the hiring of Jonathan Alicea as Junior League Manager.
“I am honored and excited to join the Beat the Streets staff,” Alicea said. “To be able to give back to BTS and New York City through the sport of wrestling is an incredible opportunity. I can’t wait to see the NYC wrestling culture continue to grow and all the amazing things these young students will accomplish.”
Alicea is a BTS alumnus who was a two-time all-New York City wrestler for Martin Luther King Jr. Educational Campus. Alicea became a first-generation college student and continued his wrestling career at NCAA Division III SUNY Brockport. After earning a bachelor’s degree in physical education with a K-12 New York State teaching certification, he returned to New York City to teach others. He also serves as a physical education teacher and wrestling coach at Cornerstone Academy for Social Action (CASA) middle school in The Bronx.
"We are happy to have one of our alumni working for us,” Seidel said. “Jon is a leader on and off the wrestling mat and is a shining example of how New York City students can use the sport of wrestling to achieve their dreams of earning a college education. We look forward to seeing Jon helping us grow the Junior League and youth wrestling in New York City.”
Since being founded in 2005, Beat the Streets has pioneered a movement that now includes 150 individual wrestling programs, a youth league and the first girls high school league.
BTS works to develop the full human and athletic potential of New York City urban youth and strengthen the city's wrestling culture. We aim to make a lifelong impact on student-athletes through the lessons learned on the wrestling mat -- discipline, perseverance, self-reliance, humility and a strong work ethic.
