13 Beat the Streets student-athletes win PSAL boys city championships
Seven BTS Academy members will advance to compete at the New York state championships on Feb. 28-March 1 in Albany.
Thirteen Beat the Streets student-athletes, including seven in the BTS Academy program, claimed Public Schools Athletic League boys city championships this past weekend at Michael J. Petrides School on Staten Island.
With the win, they qualified to represent the PSAL and wrestle at the New York state championships on Feb. 28-March 1 at MVP Arena in Albany.
In Division 1, Academy members Matthew Velez (Thomas Edison), Edward Chin (James Madison), Bilali Assoumanou (Lehman) and Kerolos Gorgy (Edward R. Murrow) earned the top spot on the podium. Velez seized his second city title with a 7-0 win, while Chin, Assoumanou and Gorgy all scored a fall. BTS members Amit Kholmatov (Staten Island Technical), Eric Ivry (James Madison) and Lazare Chikhradze (Franklin D. Roosevelt) also won city titles.
In Division 2, BTS Academy members Joshua Uben and Aiden Brito (both of Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) and Yusuf Abdali (Robert F. Kennedy) claimed city titles. Uben scored two major decisions for his first city title, while Brito had two falls to repeat as city champion. Abdali posted a technical fall for his first city title after being a runner-up last year.
BTS members Qudir Lloyd (Eagle Academy), Tysun Gillard (Eagle Academy) and Tristian Dilullo (RKA) also claimed city titles. Lloyd scored a takedown in overtime to win a title after being a runner-up last year, Dilullo had a fall and Gillard scored two technical falls to capture his fourth city title.
Nine BTS Academy members also took runner-up honors, with four in Division 1 and five in Division 2.
Evin Gursoy (Midwood) and Gillard each claimed their fourth city title and were named the Keith Conrade Outstanding Wrestler for their respective divisions. Gursoy, a two-time state finalist and 2024 state champion, had two technical falls and two falls.
